The Argies are at it again

Andy Burnham, between Leopoldo Galtieri and Javier Milei

Andy Burnham, between Leopoldo Galtieri and Javier Milei.

As if the world didn’t have enough problems, yesterday the president of Argentina, Javier Milei, gave a speech puffing out his chest because he has the school bully, donald trump, in his corner because the UK didn’t support him in his war against Iran. As I said earlier, this is what international diplomacy has become in the modern age: petty tit-for-tat personal scores to settle. It doesn’t matter that the UK and the US supposedly have a “special relationship” or that NATO is a defensive alliance, not an offensive alliance, today I am supporting my “friend” in Argentina, because he’s as short-sighted as me, and together we can cause maximum harm to the most people in the world, with our short-sighted, jingoistic policies that we use to gin up our bases.

It’s very tiring.

All I can say is that I hope Andy Burnham wakes up in a mood to slap down Milei’s jumped up impetuousness. Argentina is in a better economic, financial and democratic position than it was in 1982, but using trump as an excuse for his trump-like behaviour will only get him into trouble again, as it did with Galtieri when he attempted to assert Argentina’s claim on the Falklands. Milei doesn’t realise that he is just being used by trump to make him look good in his upcoming mid-term elections.
